The center for cultural entertainment, Akshardham is located on the outskirts of Delhi. The temple encompasses an area of over 26 acres and is known for its architectural splendor. The marvelous edifice is built with the perfect fusion of traditional and modern architectural technique. The shrine has been constructed under the aegis of Pramukh Swami Maharaj of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).

Surprisingly, no materials of steel or cement has been used and its design is said to have been inspired by ancient Indian temple architecture. The temple tower measures about 108 foot and is made up of 6,000 tons of sandstone. About 1, 000 skilled craftsmen worked for more then 12 million hours and complete the whole complex in the early 1990s.

Attractions of Akshardham Temple Complex

Also known as Swami Narayan temple, its interior shimmers with a huge idol of Shri Swaminarayan. Other deities like Shri Radha Krishna Dev, Shri Sita Ram, Shri Laxmi Narayan and Shri Uma Maheshwar. The main temple is positioned on the shoulders of 148 huge elephants, supported with 11-feet tall panchdhatu statue of Swaminarayan presiding over the structure. A number of galleries inside the temple complex houses museum with portrays of personal belongings of Saint Swaminarayan.

Cultural Programmes in Akshardham Temple

Robotic Show: This is the first programme which starts with the rotation of a massive stone. As the story goes on, spectators are offered the religious life story of Swaminarayan, through the movement of robots.

Multi-media presentation: A hall house with I-Max screen theater displays a film-form on the true story of an 11 year old Yogi, Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The show, known as Neelkanth Darshan highlights the life and teaching of the Saint for the well-being of mankind.

Light and Sound show: Akshardham temple glitter like a chandelier, when lit up at night. The three exhibition hall, namely, “Sahajanand Darshan”, “Neelkanth Darshan”” and “Sanskruti Vihar”, built around two huge ponds is the prime venue for light and sound show.

Boat ride: Boating in the “Sanskruti Vihar” offers an unforgettable experience to its riders. The 14-minute boat ride takes visitors through the different eras and glorifying heritage of ancient India.

Besides, enjoying the cultural extravaganza in the temple complex, visitors can feed themselves with stuffs served in canteen. It's big enough to accommodate 5,000 people at a time. One can also check out the research center meant for social harmony. The meditation garden, beautified with fountains and bronze sculptures are nice places to hang out.

Further, there is a place for shopoholics. Books related to Swaminarayan, decor elements and small artifacts are available at reasonable rate.
